Vyborg Castle

Vyborg Castle, a medieval fortress located on a small island in Vyborg, is one of the most iconic historical sites in Russia. Constructed in 1293 by the Swedes during their crusade against Karelia, the castle served as a stronghold against Russian forces and played a crucial role in the defense of the Swedish kingdom's eastern frontier. Over the centuries, the castle has witnessed numerous battles and sieges, including the famous Russo-Swedish War of 1495-97, where the 'Vyborg blast' supposedly scared off Russian attackers, cementing its place in local folklore.

The castle's main architectural feature is the St. Olaf's Tower, named after the patron saint of Norway. This towering structure offers visitors panoramic views of Vyborg and the surrounding area. Inside the castle, there are several exhibition halls that detail the region's history, from its medieval origins to its turbulent modern history, including its time under Finnish control and its annexation by the Soviet Union during World War II.

In addition to its historical significance, Vyborg Castle has undergone extensive restoration efforts, preserving its medieval European atmosphere. The castle hosts a variety of cultural events, including medieval reenactments, festivals, and guided tours that provide deep insights into the history of the region. Visiting Vyborg Castle is like stepping back in time, offering a unique glimpse into the rich and complex history of this borderland region between Russia and Europe.
