Khodynskoye Pole Park
Khodynskoye field once belonged to Dmitry Donskoy: it is mentioned in land ownership documents as early as 1389. In those days, meadows and arable land were located here. In 1775, Empress Catherine II staged celebrations on the field in honor of the victory over the Ottoman Empire, and with since then, the field has become a traditional place for mass festivities. The coronations of Russian emperors were celebrated here.In 1896, during the celebrations in honor of the coronation of Nicholas II, a tragedy occurred here - more than 1,300 people died in a stampede on the field.
In 1910, a new stage in history of the field: an airfield was built on it, which in Soviet times bore the name of Mikhail Frunze, and the field itself was renamed Oktyabrskoye. The first international air flights began to operate from here in 1922. The airfield was closed in 2003. A large number of old planes and helicopters, and at one time they even planned to set up a museum of aviation technology here. But this idea never materialized b.
In the 2000s, the territory of the field began to be gradually built up with large shopping and public complexes. The largest shopping center in Europe "Aviapark", the sports palace "Megasport", VEB "Arena" and other large-scale facilities are located here. The field was planned to be developed further, but in 2013 local residents organized a social movement in support of a project that turns the former airport into a park area. Italian, German and Russian companies took part in the architectural competition for the best layout of the new park. As a result, a compromise was adopted, which made it possible to take into account the wishes of the residents of the area and did not turn the arrangement of the park into an expensive long-term construction.
The Khodynskoye Pole park occupies more than 24 hectares. Thematic zones are planned like airport terminals: there is an area for a relaxing holiday, sports and cultural spaces. The central alley is located on the former airport runway. An artificial pond appeared in the park with wooden promenades and picturesque floristic compositions. More than 1,000 trees and bushes were planted here, lawns and flower beds were planted, and footpaths with benches for rest were laid. For young guests, three playgrounds were built in different parts of the park. They have swings, labyrinths with stairs and slides, rope parks, trampolines. In hot weather, the air is refreshed by "dancing fountains" with jets that change height and create colorful optical effects. In the evenings, the fountain is illuminated and turns into a musical one.
The park's sports grounds attract outdoor enthusiasts not only from nearby areas, but also from different parts of the capital. The large skatedrome has a variety of obstacles for extreme sportsmen with different levels of training. Also in the park there are tennis courts, ping-pong tables, volleyball and basketball courts with rubber coating, fitness and workout equipment. And if you like unusual rides (by the way, you can find other amusement parks in the [Moscow amusement parks](https://kudago.com/msk/entertainment/?type=amusement) section on KudaGo), you can go to the mirror maze. The park hosts charity runs, workshops, and other events.
There are no stationary food outlets in the park yet, but you can find large shopping malls with food courts nearby. Entrance to the park is free, you can visit it around the clock.
