Paris Sewer Museum

The Paris Sewer Museum (Musée des Égouts de Paris) offers a unique opportunity to explore the fascinating underground network of Paris, revealing the city's essential sewage and water systems. The museum presents a blend of history, science, and engineering, allowing visitors to discover the evolution of the Paris sewer system from its origins in the early 19th century to today’s modern infrastructure. This sprawling underground network was developed as part of Paris's broader public health reforms, spearheaded by visionary engineers like Eugène Belgrand.

Walking through the tunnels, visitors can learn about the important role the sewers played in the sanitation and modernization of Paris, as well as their impact on public health. During the visit, there are interactive exhibits, historical displays, and guided tours led by sewer workers who share interesting anecdotes and insights. The sewers also provided inspiration for writers like Victor Hugo, who famously referenced them in his works, describing the underbelly of Paris as the 'intestine of the leviathan'.

The museum reopened in 2021 after a major renovation, with modernized exhibitions and accessible pathways. It offers educational workshops and thematic activities that make the visit enjoyable for both adults and children. The exhibits cover various topics such as the environmental benefits of the sewer system, wastewater treatment, and the adaptation of the infrastructure over the years to meet the city's evolving needs, including the installation of over 140,000 km of fiber optics to support modern communication networks.
