“Proviant Shops” architectural complex at the Museum of Moscow

Since 2006, the buildings of the former Proviant warehouses have become part of the Museum of Moscow museum association. Currently, it hosts exhibitions of contemporary art, events dedicated to the development of architecture and urban urbanism.

A single compositional construction of the architectural group of buildings combines large forms of arched openings and portals, and smooth and rustic walls, together with sculptural wreaths, add variety to strict facade. The famous architect Shchusev wrote about this building as follows: “The simplicity of the architectural solution here is unequal. The few details of the decoration are drawn with exceptional perfection.”

The Museum of Moscow has moved its entire collection of more than 990,000 museum items to a new premises. It includes rare furniture, costumes of citizens from different eras, objects of decorative, applied and artistic art, documents, a collection of photographs and stamps, rare books, archaeological finds, unique porcelain.

The museum contains paintings by Surikov and Aivazovsky, Polenov and Nesterov, personal documents from the archives of Moscow historians — Sytin, Zbarsky, a rare collection of weapons, plans, maps and handwritten books. The whole variety of the exposition tells visitors about the life of citizens, their everyday life, the development of communal and transport infrastructure. The museum's scientific library stores more than 60,000 books on the history of the city, about 50,000 copies of the capital's magazines and newspapers.

Currently, the museum complex houses permanent exhibitions and holds temporary exhibitions, chamber music festivals and concerts, city cultural programs and children's game stores.

The Moscow Department of Culture has created a working group to develop a museum project for a new image of the capital that will correspond to the realities of the 21st century. It includes famous architects, researchers of Moscow, designers and technologists. The project is under development.
