Musée Guimet
The Musée Guimet, also known as the National Museum of Asian Arts, houses one of the largest collections of Asian art in the world. Founded by Émile Guimet in 1889, the museum originally began in Lyon before relocating to Paris. The collection spans the entire Asian continent, featuring art from regions including China, India, Japan, and Southeast Asia, encompassing over 7,000 years of history.
The museum was created from the passion of Émile Guimet, a wealthy industrialist and avid traveler who gathered an extensive array of cultural artifacts from his travels across Asia. The collection expanded thanks to contributions from other explorers and scholars, such as Louis Delaporte in Cambodia and Paul Pelliot in Central Asia. These early expeditions brought significant works back to France, which became central to the museum’s impressive holdings.
Visitors can explore a variety of themed exhibits, including Buddhist statues, ancient textiles, ceramics, and manuscripts. One highlight is the Khmer courtyard, which features a magnificent collection of Cambodian sculptures. The museum also boasts a historic library that has been recognized as a “Monument Historique.” Following a major renovation in 2001, the museum now includes enhanced exhibition spaces, panoramic terraces, and a library open to researchers.
The Musée Guimet remains dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of Asian civilizations, bridging cultures through art and educational programs. Regular temporary exhibitions, such as the upcoming 'Ming Gold' exhibition, further enrich the experience by showcasing different aspects of Asian heritage. The museum also hosts cultural events, including concerts and film screenings, to provide an immersive experience of Asian culture.
