Princess Turandot fountain on the Arbat

This memorial fountain was built in the late 1990s by sculptor Alexander Burganov and installed near the Vakhtangov Theater in commemoration of 75 years since the first production of the famous play fairy tales of the Italian playwright “Princess Turandot”. The image of the wayward princess acts as a symbol of the Moscow [theater] (http://kudago.com/msk/place/vakhtangov/), and thanks to the original stage solution, the performance is perceived completely new. As you know, Princess Turandot was staged in 1922, when the artistic director of the theater Yevgeny Bagrationovich Vakhtangov was already seriously ill.

In the central part of the oval bowl there is a throne on which Princess Turandot sits sparkling gilded. The monument is surrounded by a stone bench, where many people walking along [Arbat] (http://kudago.com/msk/place/staryj-arbat/) like to relax. A few years ago, vandals, apparently seduced by the gilded metal from which the statue is made, sawed off the princess's hand, but soon it was completely restored.
