Baryshnikov House
The apartment house of A.Ya.Baryshnikov is located on Marat Street. This place has always been busy, but was not one of the central and fashionable streets. It was rare to find luxurious carriages on it, representatives of the aristocracy and the Petersburg nobility preferred to settle in houses built on other major streets. Merchants, middle officials and creative intelligentsia most often lived on Marat Street.
Initially, in the second half of the XIX century, on the site at number 31 there was a stone three-storey building belonging to Countess Orlova-Chesmenskaya, in subsequent years the house came into the possession of M.E.Kleinmichel. At the end of the XIX century, the house was acquired by the manufactory merchant A.Ya.Baryshnikov, who soon decided to make it more comfortable and modern. The creation of the project of the new building was entrusted to the St. Petersburg architect V.V. Shaub, who supervised the construction. According to the initial project he drew up, it was supposed to be an ordinary house for that time, built according to the basic canons of the eclectic style.
Together with the architect, the control over the works begun in 1897 was carried out by A.Ya.Baryshnikov's son, engineer A.A.Baryshnikov. It was he who was responsible for the calculations of the strength of the building, the correct installation of beams made of iron, the calculations of the construction of various vaults: cylindrical, flat, vaults with elements of solid metal. Shortly after the start of construction, Baryshnikov reworked and supplemented Schaub's original project, giving the future building features inherent in the Art Nouveau style. A year later, Alexander Baryshnikov became the head of the decoration of the new house. Being an engineer by his main occupation, he was also known not only as an architect, but also as a talented artist and theater-goer. Baryshnikov was engaged in small details of the building, supervised the artistic work on its design, including interior decoration of the premises.
The form of the house is quite simple, without any frills. At the same time, it should be noted that the exterior facade of the building is decorated with magnificent and masterfully executed decorations. On the facades there are stucco decorations dedicated to the theme of flowers and plants, which is typical for Art Nouveau buildings. The theme of the swamp, used in the design of the Baryshnikov house, is very close to St. Petersburg in its spirit. Especially noteworthy are the stained-glass windows in the front door that have survived to this day. They need to be carefully examined, because they are covered from above by numerous layers of paint, under which the original swamp landscape is guessed. Stucco decorations were made in the workshop of I.P.Konoplev, while F.M.Gorshkov was in charge of plastering works, and carpentry orders were carried out in the company "Peter Belyaev's heirs". The paintings belong to the brush of Alexander Baryshnikov himself. The finished house housed twenty-two apartments, the owner of one of which, in an area equal to three eight-room apartments, was the owner of the house. The building also housed four shops, a laundry room and basements for storing firewood. In the early 1900s, the headquarters of the Imperial Russian Theater Society was located in the Baryshnikov House. Then the building housed the publishing house "Rosehip", with which many famous Russian writers and poets worked.
