Anchor Square (Yakornaya Ploshchad) is the central square of Kronstadt, an important historical site with a deep connection to Russia's naval history. Originally, the square served as a storage area for anchors from decommissioned ships in the 18th and 19th centuries. Over time, it evolved into the city's main public space, marked by significant historical events, particularly during the Russian revolutions of 1905-1907 and 1917.

The most prominent feature of Anchor Square is the majestic Naval Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, built between 1903 and 1913. This neo-Byzantine cathedral, designed by V. Kosyakov, is a key symbol of Kronstadt and serves as a monument to all Russian sailors who lost their lives in service. The cathedral's imposing presence dominates the square, and its golden dome is visible from miles away, serving as a beacon for both spiritual and navigational purposes.

Anchor Square is also home to several important monuments, including the statue of Admiral Stepan Makarov, a renowned naval commander and polar explorer. The monument, created by sculptor L.V. Sherwood, depicts Makarov standing atop a granite pedestal shaped like a breaking wave, symbolizing his tragic death during the Russo-Japanese War. Additionally, the square features a unique cast-iron pavement, laid out in 1870, which has remarkably survived over 150 years without major renovations.
