The central power station of the city tram

Today, a rare city in Russia does not have a tram service. St. Petersburg, of course, is no exception. And at the beginning of the last century, when the tram ran through major European cities, Kiev, Nizhny Novgorod, Kursk and Orel, this type of transport did not exist in the capital of that time. The reason for this is the common horse-drawn horses in the city, whose owners did not want competition and in every way prevented the emergence of tram tracks.

But horse horses did not ride on ice, so for ten years the tram in St. Petersburg ran only in winter on the frozen waters of the Neva, and only in 1907 appeared on the streets of the city. At the same time, the first St. Petersburg tram station was put into operation, built near the Monastyrka River on Atamanskaya Street, building 3/6.

The station was designed on the model of European analogues in a fashionable geometric style at that time. Despite its boring name, its architecture is impressive: the arched shape of the windows, a turret with round upper windows, a lot of decorative elements — architects led by AI Zazersky worked hard to create a glory. The building is now an architectural monument. Interestingly, the thermal power plant is still functioning properly, serving three districts of the city, so the work of engineers was also done in good faith.
