Because the full name is “Garden in memory of the victims of the execution on January 9, 1905.” It was from this place that the workers of Narva Outpost moved towards the Winter Palace. Then they were shot.

In 1924, a wrought-iron Art Nouveau grille was installed along the park. It is noteworthy that it was created in 1901 and managed to win two gold medals in Paris. The fate of this lattice is very interesting: it decorated the fence near the Winter Palace, after the revolution it lay idle on the square for four years, and when it got to the January 9 Park, the two-headed eagles and the imperial monograms were taken out of it by the Soviet authorities. The blockade of Leningrad did not spare the park: the trees were used for firewood, and the land beneath them went to the gardens.

After the war, the park was restored, and in 1954 the government gave it to children. Now it is a quiet corner of nature in a busy city.
