monument to N.M. Przhevalsky

Przhevalsky is a famous traveler and researcher of Central Asia, major general and honorary citizen of our city. The monument was made by the brilliant sculptor Ivan Schroeder in 1892. At that time, it was impossible to imagine that his face would be so similar to that of the leader of nations. Guides say that even today they are asked why Stalin was depicted on this sculpture with a camel.

We have to explain that it is not Joseph Vissarionovich at all, but Nikolai Mikhailovich, and it was he who “discovered” and first described the wild camel. But this is not his only merit — Przhevalsky was a major climatologist, and also made a significant contribution to the geographical knowledge of the region of Northern Tibet.
