Alexey Balabanov died on May 18, 2013 from acute heart failure. He spent his last few days at the Duny sanatorium in the Leningrad Region, where he worked on a new scenario.

The director was buried at the Smolenskoye Cemetery, where the graves of many famous personalities are located. Fans of Balabanov's work say that his grave is modesty and inconspicuous. There are no monuments or monuments, because the director was simple and wanted everything to be “like people”. According to his friends, he asked after his death to put only a wooden Orthodox cross on his grave.
