Not only the Transfiguration Cathedral itself is a landmark of St. Petersburg, but also the fence surrounding it. It was built in 1832-33 by architect V.P.Stasov. The fence marks the victory in the Russian-Turkish war of 1828-1829. Its basis is 102 barrels of captured Turkish cannons. They are installed on granite bases — three on each. The bases are united by huge chains that form a fence. The muzzle of the cannons look down, signifying that they will never fight again. Also on the barrels of the guns you can see the emblems of the Ottoman Empire and the names given to them during the minting. The middle guns in the triad are decorated with double-headed eagles. The eagles and the cross on the central gate of the cathedral in the Soviet period of history were destroyed and restored only in 2004. It is interesting that in one of the episodes of the film Heart of a Dog, the fence of the Transfiguration Cathedral is flashed, although the story takes place in Moscow.
