Mosaic “Tenderness of Evil Hearts” in Alexandrovsky Park

In 1901, Empress Alexandra Fedorovna issued a decree on the construction of a demonstration medical institution. In the same year, the City Duma allocated a plot of land for it on the territory of the Alexander Park.

In 1905, the construction of the Orthopedic Clinical Institute was completed. It was called nothing more than a palace. A unique gym, a spa, chic chandeliers, marble stairs.

Outside the building was decorated with majolica “Virgin with Child” (“Tenderness of Evil Hearts”).

Petrov-Vodkin began his career with the image of the Virgin and Child on the wall of the apse of this building. While working on the picture, Kuzma Sergeevich had to travel to London. There, the sketch of the icon was processed at the Dulton ceramics factory and transferred it to majolica.

Traditionally, before such an icon, Christians pray for healing from lameness, relaxation, pacification of enemies and softening of evil hearts. The icon was painted during the First World War and became the artist's reaction to what was happening. The work in this technique was one of the first in the city.
