In 1828 Nikolai Gogol and his friend Alexander Danilevsky moved to Northern Palmyra. The high cost of living in the capital surprised young people a lot - they were able to afford only a one-room apartment in the apartment house of merchant Galybin at Gorokhovaya, 46. Petersburg, with its damp and cloudy weather, made an unpleasant impression on Gogol, and his cramped apartment, infinitely far from the banks of the Neva, gave rise to despair in him. However, he did not live here long, and soon moved to another, more spacious apartment.

Since then, the house itself has been rebuilt several times, and the largest was the redevelopment of 1854, when the new owner completed the fourth floor, significantly changing the facade of the building. The next reconstruction was waiting for the house in less than 20 years, this time it was worked on by architects Jerome Kitner and Victor Schreter. It is thanks to their project that the house looks like it does now.
