Coffee and Tea House in the Summer Garden

The coffee house is located near Fontanka. It was built in the early 19th century on the site of the Petrovsky Grotto. It was an unusual and beautiful structure: the walls of the halls were decorated with tuff and shells, and the facades were decorated with sculptures and columns. There was an organ that played as a result of the pressure of water, and a fountain with a gilded figure of Neptune. But the flood of 1777 destroyed the Petrovsky Grotto. Only the walls that became the basis of the Coffee House designed by K. Rossi survived. The facades of the house are simple, but they are enlivened by decorative sculptures, stucco frieze and garlands on the attic. Tunnels were discovered under the house in 1925. What they were used for, has not yet been found out. Now the Coffee House has a cafe and a souvenir shop.

The teahouse is located on the south side of the Summer Palace. It is built of wood, but the facades are decorated in the style of Russian classicism. In the 19th century, this house served as a pantry. And in its middle, open part, you could hide from the rain. In 1981, the Tea House was restored. Now it is an exhibition hall.
