Bazhanov House

Pavel Fedotovich Alyoshin built one house in St. Petersburg, but one that the Northern Capital is still proud of. He put all his youthful enthusiasm and talent into the Bazhanov House.

The North shines through in the spirit of this building, faced with red Gangut granite, and in the harmony and orderliness of its forms. Art Nouveau manifests itself in the unexpected neighborhood of stone with turquoise majolica, in the carved ornament of the frieze above the windows of the upper floor, in the asymmetry of the facade, entrance and arch, in the variety of window shapes and especially in the interior of the house. When designing it, the architect collaborated with great artists. Among them are Vrubel, who designed the majolica fireplace “Volga and Mikula”, and Roerich, who decorated the dining room with a huge 30-meter frieze consisting of seven large and twelve small canvases (currently time they have been moved to the Russian Museum), also dedicated to epic characters. Home improvement is thought out to the smallest detail. Copper gutters, Karazh marble on the stairs and a huge light lamp above it, marble window sills throughout the house and walnut wood as a paneling. Unique door handles, luxurious friezing, majolica tiles for fireplaces, original light shades and wrought-iron chandeliers — everything here speaks of wealth and luxury.

The engineering equipment of the house was brought to perfection, there was an air conditioning system in it, hot water was supplied around the clock, and the house was heated by steam. The entrance to Bazhanov's apartment was from the street, and the rest of the apartments - from the courtyard.

The three-story house was built for members of the trade and industrial partnership, in which the merchant Philadelf Gennadievich Bazhanov was the founder and main shareholder. Bazhanov's large family occupied two lower floors with forty rooms. The interior of each of them is unique.

Now part of these rooms is occupied by the children's library, while the architectural heritage of a century ago is carefully preserved. The remaining rooms in the apartment house are residential apartments.

Currently, the house is an architectural monument of federal significance.

Guided tours of the state halls of the Bazhanov House are held every second Friday of every month at 11:30am (for single visitors) and by prior arrangement (group tours). Guided tours are free.
