Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Staraya Derevnya

The stone church, which can be seen today on Primorsky Avenue, was built on the site of a wooden church that appeared on the orders and at the expense of Count Bestuzhev-Ryumin. The modern building appeared in 1809, half a century after the construction of the first building, which was burned by lightning.

The project was led by architect Mochulsky, who chose the Empire style that was not quite typical for Orthodoxy for the new church. The rotunda of twelve columns right under the dome gives the structure a special elegance. For a long time there was a bell here, which was saved from the fire of the first church — it had the coat of arms of Bestuzhev-Ryumin and the mark of the master who cast the bell. In the middle of the XVIII century, this bell split.

In 1937, the church was closed, ten years later the bell tower was demolished, and the building housed a factory that produced various rubber products, from washers to toys. Since 2003, services have been held in the church again.
