Peter the Great is rightfully considered a statesman who laid the foundation for Russian science, including botany in its current form. By his decree, he established the Aptekarsky Gorodok, which later became the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden.

St. Petersburg Botanical Garden is the northernmost in Russia. There are more than 8,000 plants in a relatively small area, including “aborigines” of the subtropics and the tropical climatic zone of the globe.
