Jesus Christ Anglican Church
The first official church service was held at the Anglican Church on March 6, 1754. This event took place in house No. 56, on the English Embankment.
The former house of Pyotr Borisovich Sheremetyev was sold to the Consul of England in 1753. In 1815, Giacomo Quarenghi, a famous Italian architect, was invited to reconstruct the building. He made it in the style of strict classicism, installed statues on the pediment with the symbolic names “Faith”, “Hope” and “Love”, and placed them on the pedestals of lions.
In 1876, the next reconstruction was carried out by engineer Fedor Boltenhagen. He rebuilt the building, making it two-story, rusticated the walls, decorated with pilasters and stained glass windows. The church hall was decorated in the form of a garden of paradise — painted with golden ears, laurel leaves, rose hips, and grapevines. This decision was unusual for the Church in general, and even more so for the Anglican Church. Stained glass windows were brought from England and are the only model in the country made in this technique. The organ was made in Sheffield in 1877.
In 2016, the building was transferred to the St. Petersburg State Music Hall Theater. The building is currently undergoing reconstruction, after which a new Classical Music Concert Hall will be opened here. In May 2019, William McVicker, a British organ expert, visited the former Anglican Church, who inspected the local ancient organ and promised to help restore this cultural property Russia and the world. Perhaps the music of this majestic instrument will soon be played again within the walls of the building.
