Aquarium Garden

The history of the Aquarium Garden is amazing and interesting. A tiny green park in the center of Moscow could not just appear here, it was clearly part of some other garden. It all started with the lands of the Novodevichy Convent. “What does the aquarium have to do with it? - the inquisitive will ask. History gives the following answer: at different times, there was a shooting range, a bowling alley, a winter skating rink in the garden. An aquarium was installed in one of the gazebos — hence the name. Although, of course, we can assume that the tiny garden flaunts like a green window in the middle of dense buildings, surrounded on both sides by theaters.

There were a lot of things in the garden at different times. First, a smithy, then a wood-burning warehouse — and a little later, there was a coup in the history of a tiny land plot. The first electric exhibition was brought to the territory. It was opened by Savva Morozov. The exhibition was a great success: people rode trams that were powered by electricity. The jury of the exhibition took care of the fun: the grotto in the middle of the exhibition was illuminated with incandescent lamps, and a balloon rose from it. Moscow, far from such novelties, knocked down a shaft for a wonderful performance.

And everything changed again: the exhibition was closed, the garden was taken over by the new owner. He treated the garden in a very original way: he named it after the city of Chicago, and then launched mass construction. On the territory of the garden, the asphalt was completely broken, and a brick was removed under it. Tons of land were brought from all over Moscow and poured into pits. The new owner even managed to find centuries-old trees somewhere that were planted in the garden. Two weeks passed - just as, according to Gilyarovsky's memoirs, centuries-old oaks were brought to Lefortovo on the same day, so in two weeks a shady garden was organized - with flower beds, old trees and theater, fireworks, performances and everything else. They say that Shekhtel managed to put his hand in the architecture of the garden trellises, but no one will check this fact anymore.

The further history of the Aquarium Garden is the frequent change of owners and endless theaters. At first they were summer, and then the Mossovet Theater and the Satire Theater grew up. An American restaurant has opened in the Aquarium Garden. After the performances and during the intermission, theater spectators come for a walk around the territory, and in the late afternoon entertainment programs are organized here. Bulgakov sent his heroes to the Aquarium Garden: it was from the Satire Theater, which was renamed in the novel in the variety show, that the newly minted vampire Varenukha flew into the fresh air.
