monument on the site of the Nyenschanz fortress

Inside the fortress was a small Swedish town with a population of 2,500 people, Lutheran and even Orthodox churches. Having founded the Peter and Paul Fortress, Peter ordered to tear down the fortifications of Nyenshants, and set up a tree nursery on this place. Seedlings for city gardens and parks were grown here. Later, he founded Okhta Shipyards here, and the district remained an industrial zone for several centuries.

Everyone also knows the story of the failed construction of the Okhta Center tower for Gazprom on the same embankment. They started to lay its foundation, but excavations revealed that this land is full of archaeological sites from different eras.

Today, on the Sverdovskaya embankment at the mouth of Okhta, you can see a granite monument dedicated to the lost Nienshants fortress.
