The first sketch of the monument was made by the author Lyubov Kholina back in 1956. It has been refined many times, and only came to life at the end of the 20th century.

For a long time, the authorities did not give permission to erect a monument to the “reactionary” writer. The ice broke in the late 80s, when a competition was announced for the design of a monument to Dostoevsky, which Kholina won on a common basis.

At first, they wanted to install the statue at the confluence of the Kryukov Canal and the Griboedov Canal, but then it was moved here, to Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street. This place was not chosen by chance: Dostoevsky lived in the neighborhood and liked to sit on a bench near the Vladimir Cathedral, just a few meters from the point where his bronze copy now sits.
