Palazzo Valentini
Palazzo Valentini offers an extraordinary immersive journey into the archaeology of ancient Rome. Beneath this Renaissance palace, archaeologists uncovered the remains of two luxurious patrician houses dating back to the 4th century AD, as well as the remains of a temple likely dedicated by Emperor Hadrian to Trajan and his wife Plotina. The domus, equipped with private bathing areas, were likely owned by influential Roman families.
The site uses multimedia technology to recreate the missing parts of the ancient houses, providing visitors with an experience that brings the ruins to life. Guided by an audio narrative from well-known Italian archaeologist Piero Angela, visitors walk along glass walkways, seeing the walls of the villas, original marble fragments, and intricate mosaics. The guided tour also includes reconstructions of various thermal baths, such as the calidarium, tepidarium, and frigidarium, and a look at marble decorations and other remnants of the opulent past of Roman high society.
The experience also features projections and sound effects to help visualize what these structures looked like during the height of the Roman Empire. The tour ends with a 3D recreation of the site during imperial times, giving a comprehensive picture of what life might have been like in these grand residences.
