Nevsky Prospekt

Nevsky Prospekt, unlike its direct European and overseas counterparts, from the air resembles a reed broken in half. The reason for the curvature of the avenue is in its history. The road was built from two ends. From the side of the Marine Station, it was improved for the rapid movement of goods: products , hay and firewood. And from the side of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, the monks built the road. Due to the inconsistency of the actions of the clergy and merchants, the avenue acquired a bend, where the Ploshchad Vosstaniya metro station is now located. It is curious that the section of the road that the monks laid is now popularly called Staro-Nevsky.

Nevsky Prospekt is the main street of St. Petersburg and a meeting place for all citizens.During city holidays, the avenue turns into one big carnival with music, dances and parades. It is on Nevsky Prospekt that you can feel the spirit of the city of Peter , to see its inhabitants and observe the modern life of the metropolis.

The avenue has a length of 4.5 kilometers and connects there is [Admiralty](https://kudago.com/spb/place/admiraltejstvo/) and [Alexander Nevsky Lavra](https://kudago.com/spb/place/aleksandro-nevskaya-lavra/). The city on the Neva was conceived as the sea capital of Russia, so the Admiralty shipyards had a city-forming significance at the time of their foundation. The Alexander Nevsky Lavra was also founded by Peter I to store the holy relics of Prince Alexander Nevsky, one of the city's patrons. Therefore, the road connecting these institutions became the main one in St. Petersburg. The very word "prospect" comes from the Latin "I see clearly".

Nevsky Prospekt has two sides. Citizens call them "sunny" and "shadow". The one on which the rays fall places even-numbered buildings on itself, and the other - with odd ones. During the blockade, it was the sunny side that was considered the most dangerous. In 1943, on the houses on this side, the inscription “Citizens! During shelling, this side of the street is the most dangerous - a memorial plaque with such an inscription is here to this day.

Nevsky Prospekt is cut by three reservoirs: the Moika, the Fontanka and the Griboyedov Canal. The width of the Nevsky is different - almost in the middle, near the Gostiny Dvor, it becomes wide (60 meters), and at the Moika it narrows to 25 meters.

Today it is a wide highway, busy at any time of the day or night. Here are the most beautiful bridges in the city - this is the Green Bridge over the Moika, the Kazansky Bridge over the Griboyedov Canal and the [Anichkov Bridge] (https://kudago.com/spb/place/anichkov-most/) with famous horse compositions across the Fontanka.

Nevsky Prospekt is home to many of the most beautiful buildings in St. Petersburg. They belong to different eras and architectural styles — from [Gostiny Dvor](https://kudago.com/spb/place/bgd/), which opened in 1785, to the [Singer House](https ://kudago.com/spb/place/dom-zingera/) and [Eliseevskij store](https://kudago.com/spb/place/eliseevskij-magazin/), beautiful buildings of the early 20th century in the Art Nouveau style. Nevertheless, the architecture of Nevsky Prospect miraculously merges into one harmonious ensemble.

In addition, great Russian writers, including Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, who created the story of the same name, also thought about Nevsky Prospekt. In his work, the central street of the city on the Neva seems to be a special and even mystical place. No wonder one of the most mysterious creators of Russian literature exclaimed: "Creator! What strange characters you meet on Nevsky Prospekt!"

Today, Nevsky Prospekt is the main artery of St. Petersburg. It is always noisy, lively and very crowded. People come here to dine in the best gastronomic establishments, admire the industrial space and architecture, look at shop windows or go shopping. Every day you can listen to the performances of street musicians, and on holidays you can watch the rides of cyclists or roller skaters or take part in various promotions yourself.

In winter, Nevsky becomes the most magical New Year's place. Festive trees, garlands and Christmas installations appear on the avenue. Therefore, if you want to feel the atmosphere of the approaching New Year, a walk along the avenue is an obligatory part of the program.
