Museum of Decorative Arts
The Museum of Decorative Arts (Kunstgewerbemuseum) in Berlin is one of the oldest museums dedicated to the applied arts in Germany. Located at the Kulturforum near Potsdamer Platz, the museum's extensive collection showcases art and design from the Middle Ages to the present day. Since its opening in 1867, it has grown to become a treasure trove of decorative art, featuring exhibits such as medieval treasures, Baroque and Renaissance furnishings, and Art Nouveau and Art Deco masterpieces.
Among the museum's highlights are its stunning collection of religious artifacts, intricate furniture, and delicate glass and silver works. The permanent exhibition, 'The Worlds of Rococo,' presents the porcelain and faience collection, which highlights the significance of porcelain as 'white gold' during the 18th century. Another popular exhibit is the Fashion Gallery, which presents over 150 years of fashion history, with pieces ranging from Baroque court costumes to haute couture designs by iconic fashion houses like Dior and Chanel.
Visitors can also explore the Chair Gallery, featuring revolutionary furniture designs from the 19th century to today, and a Bauhaus exhibition that highlights modern design principles. With its mix of historical artifacts, contemporary design pieces, and a unique fashion collection, the Museum of Decorative Arts provides an immersive journey into the history of European art and culture.
