The story began in 1851, when Alexey Mikhailovich, a hereditary member of the Polezhaev family, bought a beautiful house on Taganka from the Zaitsev merchants. Eight years later, the Polezhaev and Zubov families became related: Vasily Pavlovich Zubov, who owned a dye factory in Aleksandrov, married Alexey Mikhailovich's daughter Claudia. Representatives of both clans were distinguished by a variety of talents, their interests lay in many areas: music, literature, patronage, charity, science.

The owner himself appreciated classical music very much. His collection of rare bowed instruments contained remarkable examples of great violin masters such as Amati and Stradivari. The collection was inherited by his son, and after the revolution it was confiscated. It was with this private collection that the state collection began, which can be seen in the Glinka Museum.

Zubov's son collected a unique library and a collection of rare coins, which he bequeathed to the Imperial Historical Museum together with the means for its maintenance. Alexey's grandson Pavel Zubov is known as a famous scientist in the field of thermochemistry, as well as a musician, numismatist and a person who was engaged in charity work. His son Vasily became famous as a world-famous philosopher, a historian who devoted his life to science and art.

In 2006, a major restoration of the house took place — stucco molding with unusual patterns that can hardly be found anywhere else was restored, preserved things were placed inside the house, which belonged to great cultural and scientific figures who worked for the benefit of Russia all their lives. The result of the restoration is recognized as one of the best in Moscow.

Nowadays, the estate constantly hosts various events: excursions, international exhibitions, creative meetings and concerts; there is a gallery dedicated to modern sculpture.

Thus, the memory of the merchant families of the Zubovs and Polezhaevs, who gave Russia conscientious and honest people, workers and scientists, successful entrepreneurs, philanthropists, was not just preserved, connoisseurs and patrons of culture and art, but the appearance and interior decoration, the special spirit of the estate, reflecting the history of the worldview of representatives of Russia loyal to the Fatherland, have been restored.
