Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe is a monument to the heroes of the Patriotic War of 1812. It is located on Kutuzovsky Prospekt and, together with the Kutuzovskaya Izba and the Battle of Borodino Panorama Museum, forms a single memorial complex on Victory Square in the [Poklonnaya Gora area] ( https://kudago.com/msk/place/poklonnaya-gora-i-park-pobedy/).

The first stone Triumphal Arch, designed by architect Osip Bove, was opened in September 1834 at the Tverskaya Zastava. The arch stood for 102 years, but in 1936 it was dismantled during the redevelopment of the square [Belorussky Railway Station] (https://kudago.com/msk/place/belorusskij-vokzal/). The dismantled arch lay in the vaults of the Museum of Architecture for about 20 years. In 1966, it was restored in its original form and placed on Kutuzovsky Prospekt. In 2012, a large-scale reconstruction of the monument was carried out, and now the Arc de Triomphe welcomes Muscovites and guests of the city in all its glory.

The arch's pylons, made of white stone, are complemented by six pairs of cast-iron columns 12 meters high. There are sculptures of warriors in antique armor between the columns. Above are high reliefs, which depict scenes of the victory of Russian soldiers over enemies, and statues of the goddesses of Victory. The composition is crowned with a chariot drawn by six horses. The arch blends harmoniously into the cityscape and at the same time stands out against the background of the surrounding buildings.
