Svyato-Danilov Monastery

In 1293, the Tatar raid ravaged the monastery, and only during the reign of Ivan the Terrible it revived: towers and stone walls of the monastery were erected. During the war with Napoleon, the monastery was looted, and warehouses and a slaughterhouse were set up on its territory. During the Russian-Turkish war, a hospital was located here. In 1931, the monastery was closed and a colony for juvenile delinquents was organized in it. The Church of the Resurrection of the Word in Danilovskaya Sloboda, which is located outside the territory of the monastery, remained active. In 1983, St. Danilov Monastery was returned to the Church. Five years later, it, which has already been completely restored, celebrated the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus.

At one of the oldest cemeteries in Moscow, in the St. Danilov Monastery, hierarchs of the Church and the Russian aristocracy found their last refuge: Volkonsky, Golitsyns, Lvov, Vyazemsky, Meshchersky, Dashkovs, Yermolovs, Gorchakovs; cultural figures and writers: Nikolai Gogol, Nikolai Rubinstein, Vasily Perov and others.

The monastery is very beautiful, with many cathedrals, with a very nice, candle-like Memorial Chapel. Here you can hear the sweet sounds of bells coming from the monastery bell tower. You can climb the creaky wooden stairs to the walls and towers of the monastery.

In the Trinity Cathedral there are miraculous icons: St. John Cassian of Rome (18th century) and the Mother of God “Three Hands” (17th century).

Souvenirs, candles, honey, herbs, teas and freshly baked buns are sold right at the entrance.
