Smolenskaya Embankment runs along the banks of the Moscow River near the Arbat. At the corner of the embankment and Bolshoy Novinsky Lane, there is a Stalinist building with a corner tower. It was built according to the project of famous architects A. IN. Shchusev and A. K. Rostkovsky in 1930. Now the building forms the southern part of the square on the embankment in front of the newly built Novoarbatsky Bridge.

The complex of rectangular glazed towers with roofs of different heights and shapes, connected by passages at the level of the upper floors, belongs to the British Embassy. It purchased this plot of Moscow land for two London plots.

Since 2007, there has been a sculptural composition “Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson” near the embassy. Prototypes are easily guessed in her figures — Soviet actors V. Livanov and V. Solomin, who played the main roles in the series of the same name. Vasily Livanov, who became a Knight of the Order of the British Empire for his reference performance as a master of the deductive method, speaking at the opening of the monument, launched a sign into the people: if you touch the notebook Watson's book, a cherished wish will come true, but whoever dares to grab hold of Holmes's pipe is threatened with criminal showdown. Recently, a new elite residential building with fourteen floors under a copper dome of the roof was put into operation on the embankment.
