Bogdan Khmelnitsky Bridge (formerly the Kiev pedestrian bridge) connected the Rostov and Berezhkovskaya embankments of the capital. The bridge acquired its current name only in 2004, although it was opened in 2001.

The bridge is a copy of its predecessor, the Krasnoluzhsky Bridge. In the 20th century, the Bogdan Khmelnitsky Bridge was railway and was located where the Luzhnetsky Bridge now stretches. In 1977, Martha Petersen, a CIA officer, was caught on the bridge, trying to set up a cache for one of the employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR. And in 2002, it was here that Muscovites set a new world record for the number of couples kissing on the bridge. The event was attended by 2226 people, beating past record holders from the United States by 826 people.
