Moscow Mint

There is an opinion that the first mint in Russia appeared during the reign of Prince Dmitry Donskoy. Based on a detailed study of ancient coins, scientists came to the conclusion that at the end of the 14th century, specialized enterprises for the production of high-quality coins existed on the territory of Moscow. Already at that time, such organizations were under the supervision of the supreme power. The first documented Moscow Mint appeared under John III in 1534.

If we talk about official figures, the Moscow Mint was founded on April 25, 1942. Taking into account the specifics of foreign policy circumstances, initially military awards in the form of medals and orders and various insignia for labor activity were issued here.

A special room was allocated for the Mint on the territory of the Moscow Printing Factory of the State Sign. It was very important to train a large number of people to work with the equipment in a short time. Over time, the company won more and more areas and purchased imported machines. During the war period, the Moscow Mint significantly succeeded in the manufacture of medals and orders.

Gradually, the organization mastered the production of everyday goods. An artistic casting workshop was organized at the enterprise, but soon it was closed — the products were not in demand.

The end of the 40s and the beginning of the 50s of the last century were held under the auspices of close cooperation with the printing enterprise of the State Sign. The Mint produced all kinds of parts for printing equipment.

In 1949, the Mint began to study the process of melting precious metals. A few years later, alloys for jewelry products are already being actively developed here. Watches and wedding rings are on sale.

In preparation for the student festival, the Mint had to deal with the technology for the production of aluminum products. Each participant of the festival was entitled to a souvenir badge, which means that it was necessary to establish mass production.

A significant event for the Moscow Mint was the production of coins on the Olympic theme. In 1975, the company began to fulfill this particularly important task. At that time, our craftsmen did not have such experience before. Olympic coins were made of gold and silver, and today they are of great value for numismatists.

In 1996, the Mint produced for the first time a gold coin weighing a kilogram.
