Shalyapin Manor
Fedor Ivanovich Chaliapin is a peasant son, a nugget from the Russian countryside, who had a huge impact on world opera art. He was the first in Russia to be awarded the title of People's Artist, being at that time the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre. At different periods of his turbulent creative life, F. AND. Chaliapin was a soloist with the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theaters and the Metropolitan Opera. His voice was loved by both his contemporaries and those who live many years after him. There are many “Chaliapin” places in Moscow, but the house on Novinsky Boulevard is the most significant of them. The Chaliapin family lived here for several years. This is a mansion of the late XVIII century, one of the few untouched by the fire of Moscow in 1812. After the purchase, the house was rebuilt in a European way. M. Gorky, and I. Moskvin and I. Bunin S. Rachmaninov said.
This manor house was the singer's first own home. Before that, he did not have his “own” place, Chaliapin and his family rented a house. The famous singer's wife was Iola Tornagi, an Italian ballerina. She undertook the renovation and improvement of the house. Thanks to her efforts, the estate was decorated with the latest technology: gas, water supply, telephone communication and other benefits of civilization that came from Europe and made life much easier were installed here.
There is a garden adjacent to the estate, which the owners also decided to improve. There was a gazebo where, in good weather, you could relax looking at the Moscow River. To make walks in the garden pleasing to the eye, linden trees, fragrant lilac and jasmine bushes were planted there. Well-groomed flower beds with colorful flowers and comfortable benches appeared. This estate was the best fit for the large Chaliapin family, everything in it was subordinated to comfort.
After nationalization in 1918, the house was turned into a communal apartment. Only in 1978, the estate came under the jurisdiction of the Museum of Musical Culture named after M. AND. Glinka, of which she is now a part. In 1988, the House-Museum of F. AND. Chaliapin. The interior of the house and the garden are brought to the maximum extent possible with the time when the great singer lived here.
Today, the Chaliapin Manor is a cultural center of high art. In addition to excursion services, the museum staff organizes concerts and benefits of opera singers, regularly hosts “Chaliapin meetings” and festivals that enjoy constant interest among Muscovites.
