The monument symbolizes the end of the Cold War and the long-awaited unification of West and East Germany. The Berlin Wall, erected in 1961, was 155 kilometers long and divided Berlin into the GDR and Germany. It was a symbol of totalitarianism and lack of freedom. Its fall went down in the history of world politics and art.

The wall was destroyed in 1989. Part of it measuring two by four meters was presented to the Sakharov Public Center and Museum in Moscow. In 1990, a monument was made from a piece of wall, which was installed on the territory of the Sakharov Museum. The authors of the composition are Alexey Grigoriev, Daniel and Maxim Metlyansky.
