Kremlyovskaya Embankment
A resident of Russia may not know other embankments of Moscow, but everyone knows about this. The Kremlin Embankment runs along the Moscow River past the southern wall of the Kremlin with seven towers. On postcards, TV screens, movies, and even textbooks, we have seen her image many times.
The Kremlin Embankment is located between Vasilyevsky Descent and Lenivka Street. This is the first stone embankment in Moscow. It offers an amazing view of the Moscow River and the main decoration of the embankment — the Moscow Kremlin. In the south-west of the Kremlin there is the Vodovzvodnaya Tower, built in 1488 by architect Fryazin. The Taynitskaya Tower was erected in 1485 according to the project of the same architect, and a secret passage to the river was laid through it. Next are the Nameless, Petrovskaya and Moskvoretskaya towers.
From the embankment, you can see Red Square and Vasilyevsky Descent in all their glory. This place really blooms at night, when a lot of lights are reflected in the water and create a magical picture of the city at night. This is a business card and one of the most beautiful monuments of history and architecture in Moscow.
The memorial Alexander Garden with the Eternal Flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier also faces the embankment. Everyone is familiar with the spruce trees surrounding this memorial and the linden trees growing under the Kremlin wall.
A few centuries ago, the embankment looked completely different. It was a road running along the Kremlin walls. The city grew, the embankment was transformed and expanded.
There were times when protective ramparts and bastions were built on this shore to repel attacks by the Swedes. The road under the wall went to the ford across the river, and then to the bridge. For more than half a century, the embankment simply served as a garbage dump, then it was lined with logs, and later with stone. Since 1936, it has had a granite finish on the sloping retaining wall, which we can still see today. At the end of the 19th century, a horse ran along it, and at the beginning of the 20th century it was already a tram.
It is interesting to see what this embankment will look like in another century, although even now it impresses with its beauty and spaciousness. Every guest of the capital must walk or ride along the Kremlin Embankment in order to appreciate the beauty of the very heart of the city.
