Konstantino-Eleninskaya Tower of the Moscow Kremlin

The purpose of the Konstantino-Eleninskaya Tower, about thirty-seven meters high, was to protect the ancient roads that at that time led from the Kremlin to the Great Posad (Kitay-Gorod). The building was located near the river and had one of the most powerful diverting archers at that time, with which the tower was connected by means of a bridge over a deep and wide ditch.

In the period from 1670 to 1680, the building of the Konstantino-Eleninskaya Tower was supplemented with a slender hipped top, under which was its main quadrangle with a parapet and hinged loopholes, called machiculi. In the lower part of the tent contour, small windows called rumors were cut through.

By the end of the 17th century, Velikaya Street was no longer as strategically important as it once was, so the Konstantino-Eleninskaya Tower ceased to be a defensive one. Now it has been used as a dungeon where all kinds of torture were carried out against people. In 1707, Emperor Pyotr Alekseevich ordered each of the loopholes of the tower to be spread and cannons installed in them. And only a hundred years later, the bridge and the diverting archer were dismantled.
