Kamergersky Lane

Kamergersky Lane is quite small, its length is only 250 meters. But this is one of the oldest places in Moscow. Almost every house here is an architectural monument.

According to legend, voivode Dmitry Donskoy lived here back in the fourteenth century. And in later times, court officials settled in this alley. It is not for nothing that it is called Kamergersky. And it is difficult to list the names of all the famous personalities who have visited these places throughout the history of the alley. Pushkin lost his cards in one of the houses, so much so that the debt was paid not only during his lifetime, but also after his death. The famous writer and thinker Vladimir Odoevsky grew up in another house, in whose salon all the famous writers, poets and composers of the Golden Age of Russian culture stayed. Composer Prokofiev and artist Tropinin lived here. Mayakovsky, Bryusov, Yesenin read their poems in the artistic cafe “The Tenth Muse”.

Since the end of the nineteenth century, the Moscow Art Theater has been operating in the lane, which is primarily associated with the name of Chekhov. In the thirties of the last century, a house for Soviet writers and poets was built here, and more than forty people lived here. The list of historical figures whose foot touched the local pavement can be continued for a long time. But let us turn to modernity.

The theater in the former Odoevsky house is still operating, next to it is a monument to Anton Chekhov. The next building houses the Moscow Art Theater Museum, which, in addition to theatrical exhibits, contains a unique collection of Russian paintings. On the other side of the theater is the Moscow Art Theater School, so we can still see many celebrities in Kamergersky Lane. There is also the oldest bookstore in Moscow, called the House of Pedagogical Books, which is still open to customers today.

For a decade and a half, the lane has been a pedestrian zone, and, as it should be in such places, it is filled with cafes and shops. It is a pity that the elegant facades of historical buildings often hide their unsightly underside: cracks, peeling plaster, unglazed windows, crumbling bricks. So while walking down the alley, don't go into its doorways unless you want to be disappointed.
