Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The current Catholic Cathedral of the Virgin Mary in Moscow on Malaya Gruzinskaya Street was built in the neo-Gothic style. In Russia, this is the most impressive Catholic cathedral, where services are held in different languages. It was built from 1901 to 1911, and the interior decoration was completed in 1917. With the permission of the governor, construction was carried out far from the center of Moscow and large Orthodox churches, without towers and sculptural statues. The cathedral was designed by architect Thomas Bogdanovich-Dvorzhetsky.
During the years of Soviet power, the church had a hostel, then the Mosspetspromproekt Research Institute. In 1989, the struggle began to return the temple to the Catholic Church. Since 1991, services have been held in it, and since 1996, the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary has been handed over to the parish. Until December 1999, it was restored, and finally Moscow received this miracle. In September 2011, the temple celebrated its 100th anniversary.
The church of incredible beauty resembles some Italian cathedrals. It houses the largest wind organ in Russia by the Swiss company Kuhn (Kuhn), as well as the Rodgers digital organ (Rogers). World-famous organists give concerts here. They perform works by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Mozart and other classics. Organ arrangements of rock compositions and film music are often heard in the cathedral. On certain days, it is possible to listen to a charity concert of organ music. Philharmonic, modern, experimental music, concerts for children and parents — the possibilities of the organ are almost endless, it surprises with its richness of colors and moods.
The cathedral serves masses in many languages: Russian, Korean, Polish, Spanish and others. Mass and other celebrations are held according to Armenian tradition. The cathedral has a church shop, a library, as well as the Art of Good Charity Foundation.
