Moscow Cathedral Mosque

The history of the building is quite long-suffering. Several times the temple was on the verge of closure and was even under threat of demolition. The reasons for this were different. When the Bolsheviks came to power, parishioners and clergymen were persecuted, religious literature was burned, and the church itself was repeatedly looted. In 1980, on the eve of the Olympic Games, the mosque, which was located in close proximity to the Olimpiysky sports complex, was almost demolished. There is little information about the reason for this decision, but the building was saved by the joint efforts of representatives of diplomatic missions of Arab countries. But despite the difficult circumstances, the mosque did not close its doors to believers. And services were held every Friday.

In 2008, the Moscow Cathedral Mosque received the status of a cultural heritage site, but a year later the status was removed. The building is again threatened with demolition.

At the moment, a large-scale reconstruction of the building, which began almost ten years ago, continues. It is expected that after its completion, the height of the mosque's minarets will be sufficient to be seen from the Moscow Kremlin.
