Berlin Victory Column

The Berlin Victory Column, known as the Siegessäule in German, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Originally designed by Heinrich Strack, the column was constructed between 1864 and 1873 to commemorate Prussia’s victories in the Danish-Prussian War, the Austro-Prussian War, and the Franco-Prussian War. The monument, which stands 67 meters tall, is crowned with a gilded statue of Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, affectionately nicknamed 'Goldelse' by Berliners.

The column initially stood on Königsplatz in front of the Reichstag but was relocated to its current site in the Tiergarten in 1938 as part of Hitler's plans to remodel Berlin. The move included the addition of a fourth segment, increasing its height. The base of the column features reliefs and mosaics depicting significant battles and moments in Prussian history.

Visitors can climb the 285 steps to the observation deck, located at a height of 51 meters, for panoramic views of Berlin, including sights like the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, and the expansive Tiergarten park. The ascent is not for the faint-hearted but offers a rewarding perspective of the cityscape.

The Victory Column also serves as a historical marker and has hosted significant events, including a speech by then-presidential candidate Barack Obama in 2008. The monument is a testament to Berlin’s rich history and architectural heritage, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring the city.
