The history of the square is as follows. At the beginning of the XVIII century, St. Petersburg experienced a period of intensive development. Moreover, the construction was mainly carried out on the banks of the Neva and the neighborhoods closest to the Neva. By the middle of the century, there was an urgent need to put in order the center and outskirts of the city.

The future Lomonosov Square was located at that time on the outskirts of the city, then it housed the estate of the Anichkov Palace. It was this territory that architect Carl Rossi had to “put in order”.

On this territory, the Alexandrinsky Theater was built, a passage to Predmostnaya Square near the Chernyshev Bridge across the Fontanka River was arranged, and Chernysheva Square was laid out on the embankment, which in 1948 was was renamed Lomonosov Square.

The renaming of the square was due to the desire to perpetuate the memory of the outstanding scientist, naturalist, poet, artist and statesman M. Lomonosov, who did a lot for the development and prosperity of Russia and St. Petersburg itself. Moreover, since the 90s of the XIX century, a bust of M. Lomonosov by sculptor P. N. Zabello.
