A long time ago, the Oprichny Dvor of Ivan the Terrible was located here, and later noble city estates were built on this street. Vozdvizhenka can still boast of several buildings of those times. The street got its name from the monastery of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross of the Lord located here, destroyed during the fire of 1812.

House No. 8 is unusual in that it is naugol, there are only a few such houses in Moscow. Its facade is a corner, and the entrance is upstairs, on the balcony: two closing stairs lead to it. This house was bought by Nikolai Sheremetev, who secretly married serf actress Praskovya Zhemchugova. Many years later, it will house a hunting club with its strange performances, from which the future actors of the Moscow Art Theater came out.

On the other side of the street, you can see a house that exists in two worlds at once — the fictional and the present. This is the Bolkonsky house from War and Peace.

There is also a Moorish Palace in Moscow (Vozdvizhenka Street, 16). Arseny Morozov built his own sand castle for himself. You can marvel at its bizarre decoration: ropes, shells, sea knots and a horseshoe door.
