Markin Mansion (Vatican Embassy)

If you are walking near the Novoslobodskaya metro station, do not be lazy to take a look at Vadkovsky Lane: at the corner where it intersects with Tikhvinskaya Street, there is a mansion. It was built in 1904 for an honorary citizen Markin by architect Kharko. This architect built quite a lot: established and simply wealthy Muscovites ordered buildings from him, and at the beginning of the 20th century he restored the Yusupov Palace.

In the architecture of the mansion, it is worth noting the openwork butterfly motif, which is used on the gate and in the overall decoration of the building. Thanks to the intertwining lines, an impression of lightness is created. The building also has a bay window, which is typical of buildings of the time.

And you can get to the embassy itself to look at what is inside in this way: twice a year, on the Days of Historical and Cultural Heritage, some embassies open their doors to visitors. You will simply be required not to miss this significant date.

A lot of historical things have been preserved in the mansion: stairs, stucco cornices and a ventilation system — it is still in working order! The former Apostolic Nuncio, Antonio Mennini, loved Gzhel and left his collection here.

The mansion also has a small garden and a chapel in the basement. The atmosphere in the mansion, according to those who got on the tour, is very pleasant and homely.
