sculpture “Christ the Risen” at the cemetery of the Donskoy Monastery
The history of this statue begins in 1907, when Yusininsky, a major Moscow industrialist, was buried in the cemetery of the Spaso-Andronikov Monastery. On his grave, a tombstone sculptural composition “Christ the Risen” was installed, in which a bronze figure of Christ and a cross made of black labradorite stone are mounted on a cubic pedestal. In the late 1920s, the authorities closed the monastery and the cemetery related to it, and the grave of Yusininsky, together with the monument, was moved to the cemetery of the Donskoy Monastery. Apparently, the statue was not destroyed, because its author Nikolai Andreev was a very famous sculptor who created many monuments to Lenin.
This sculpture attracts the attention of many pilgrims. During the Great Patriotic War, mothers of soldiers who went to the front came here to ask to save the lives of their sons. The bronze toes of Jesus Christ are polished to shine with thousands of touches begging for intercession, and the pedestal is covered with fresh flowers and candles. Alexander Men, known in Russia, spoke warmly about this sculpture and said that he makes a pilgrimage to it every year.
