Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” (the Transfiguration of the Savior) on Bolshaya Ordynka
The first mention of the temple on this street dates back to the 70s. XVI century Horde residents were those people who were redeemed from Tatar-Mongolian captivity. They settled here and built a wooden church.
The year 1685 was marked by the construction of a stone church. In 1783, a restructuring was initiated under the direction of architect V. Bazhenov, which ended in 1790. The restoration of the building after the fire of 1812 was entrusted to the architect Oleg Bove, who rebuilt it in the Empire style, giving the central hall the shape of a rotunda. The building was re-consecrated in 1836. The miraculous icon “Joy of All Who Sorrow” was placed in the church.
The church was lucky — in the post-revolutionary years, there was a storehouse of the Tretyakov Gallery on its territory, whose employees took care of church artifacts.
Currently, it is a functioning religious building. The spiritual and educational center at the church opened a Sunday school and a youth club.
