House of Culture named after S. M. Zueva

The amazing building at 18 Lesnaya Street, as if made of a designer, is considered one of the brightest monuments of constructivism not only in Moscow, but also in the world in general.

Constructivism, as the dominant architectural style, did not last long in the USSR, less than ten years, but managed to present several genuine masterpieces. The building of the recreation center. Zueva became one of them.

Designed by Ilya Golosov clearly under the influence of cubism, it is built on the basis of asymmetrically arranged regular geometric bodies. At the heart of the building is a glass cylinder, on which the rest of the body seems to be “worn”. Inside the recreation center, a spacious bright foyer, a large auditorium, a small hall and several rehearsal rooms were planned.

Today, several theater and variety studios still operate in the building. But, of course, the most famous project that exists within its walls has been and remains the Quartet I Theater: probably the most popular theater group in Russia today. It is here that you can see all the performances with the participation of famous actors.

In recent years, under the roof of the Palace of Culture, there has been another theater, created, like Quartet I, by Sergei Petreykov. The Other Theater was created in continuation and expansion of what Quartet I does, but, unlike them, specializes in plays by “modern classics” (from Brecht to Vampilov) and completely new playwrights. Famous young directors work with the theater, and critics consider it one of the most interesting modern theaters in the capital.
